Nexium is a daily
oral medication prescribed for the treatment of frequent,
persistent heartburn due to acid reflux disease. Nexium also
helps heal the damage that acid reflux can cause to the
esophagus. Nexium is proven to lower the risk of getting stomach
ulcers.
How Nexium Works
Nexium is a "proton pump inhibitor". It shuts down some of the
pumps in your stomach that produce acid. This greatly reduces
the amount of stomach acid that can back up into the esophagus.
As a result, Nexium gives 24-hour relief from acid reflux /
heartburn.
Advantage of Nexium
Nexium is taken daily before any signs of heartburn emerge, so
it effectively prevents the pain and pressure from occurring.
Taking Nexium not only helps prevent acid reflux, it also helps
heal the damage to the esophagus caused by persistent heartburn.
Most erosions heal in 4 to 8 weeks of treatment.
For people over 60 who have had an ulcer, Nexium is also proven
to help lower the risk of stomach ulcers associated with taking
certain pain medications like aspirin and ibuprofen.
How to Take Nexium
Take Nexium daily at least one hour before meals and at the same
time every day. It should be swallowed whole, not crushed or
chewed. Nexium comes in two different strengths; your doctor
will tell you which is right for you.
Nexium Side Effects
Nexium has a low risk of side effects. They may include:
headache, diarrhea, nausea, flatulence, abdominal pain or
constipation, or dry mouth. If you experience an allergic
reaction, stop taking Nexium and seek emergency medical
attention.
Nexium Precautions
Before taking Nexium, tell your doctor if you have ever had any
type of liver disease. You may not be able to take Nexium, or
you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring. If
you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, check with your
doctor before taking Nexium. Do not take Nexium while
breastfeeding. There are no restrictions on food, beverages, or
activities while taking Nexium unless otherwise directed by your
doctor.
Drug Interactions
If Nexium is taken with certain drugs, the effects of either
could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially
important to check with your doctor before combining Nexium with
Diazepam (Valium), Digoxin (Lanoxin), iron salts (Ferro-Sequels)
or Ketoconazole (Nizoral). There are no unwanted interactions
from combining antacids and Nexium.
